Celebrating 100 years of service to
the people of Yellow Springs and Miami Township |
|
In 2007, Miami Township Fire-Rescue celebrated our 100th
anniversary as a constituted Fire Department for the Village of Yellow
Springs. That was certainly not the beginning of our history and now
entering in to the 21st century is a very exciting time for our
department.
Our Centennial celebrations included the entire community
and included four events.
Community Celebrations
On September 15th, the community came
to celebrate with us on the grounds of Mills Lawn Elementary School. We all enjoyed great
food, fire engine rides, demonstrations of rope rescue, vehicle
extrication and car fires. There were antique fire apparatus and a visit
by the CareFlight helicopter. Entertainment was provided by two bands and
a fire juggling troupe. The evening finished up with a community bon fire.
Historical Exhibit
From
November 8 to 16 an extensive amount of historical memorabilia was placed
on public exhibit at the Noyes Gallery at Antioch College. On display were
a vast number of archive photographs and newspaper articles chronicling
the departments development and emergency events for over 100 years. Also
displayed were antique fire apparatus, tools and equipment, uniforms and
more used by the department during its history.
Centennial Children's Art Exhibit
Also
on exhibit at the Noyes Gallery between November 8 to 16 were works of art
produced by more than 230 children from the Yellow Springs Community
Children's Centre, Mills Lawn Elementary School and others to help
celebrate our centennial. The works included drawings, paintings,
constructions, mosaics, and an enormous mural, all themed around
volunteering, fire fighting and EMS. All the children who participated
received a certificate of appreciation personally signed by Chief Altman.
Publication of our Miami Township Fire-Rescue 100 Year
Anniversary booklet
Published in conjunction with our Historical Exhibit, this black and white
booklet chronicles so much of the departments long history of volunteers
serving the Village of Yellow Springs, the Village of Clifton, Antioch
College and Miami Township since 1867 with many of the archive newspaper
articles and accompanying archive photos that were on display during the
public exhibit.
